Well Chlorination Process
I've been told my well needs to be chlorinated. What does that mean?

Sometimes your well needs to be chlorinated due to bacteria issues. In order to chlorinate the water lines and fixtures in your house, the chlorine needs to be pulled into every line, inside and outside, and held for at least 24 hours. The chlorine is to kill coliform bacteria which may be present in your system, such as pipes, tanks or fixtures.

Open up each spigot, one spigot at a time, run the water until you smell chlorine and turn it off. Repeat this procedure at all water outlets, hot and cold (includes tub, showers & toilets). NOTE: Be sure to remove, clean and replace the faucet strainers where applicable.

You may use the water for needs such as the toilet, but no more than necessary. It is recommended to purchase a gallon or two of bottled water from the store for drinking and cooking.

After the holding period, attach one or more hoses to an outside spigot and run the water away from the house. After it begins to clear, you may open and flush the inside lines. This is so you don't run hundreds of gallons of water through your septic system. It is advised to run the water for several days before you call the local Health Department for a sample and continue to run an outside spigot until the sample passes. You won't run out of water and the more the water is used, the better the system is flushed. On the day the Health Department comes, approximately 1 hour before they are to arrive, choose a stationary faucet (not in the kitchen), remove the strainer and keep it off, wipe the inside of the faucet with rubbing alcohol generously and let the water run steadily until the sample is taken.

Many systems have to be re-tested. Don't be alarmed if a positive bacteria count is found. The Health Department will re-test and/or the system will need to be re-chlorinated. Remember, the more the water is run off, the better the chances of the system passing!
